The Plant Cafe Organic: The food here is designed for carnivores who dine with vegetarians, or vice versa. It’s part Cafe Gratitude for the raw crowd, part Millennium for vegans, and a little Beretta for those who like pizza and cocktails. Everyone is accommodated either in the chic industrial/green interior or outside on the enclosed patio. La Mar Cebicheria Peruana: If you can’t head to the beach in Peru, the next best thing might be to sit on the deck and have a ceviche and pisco sour at the chic La Mar. I’d recommend the tasting of four ceviches, the empanadas or a causas – traditional whipped potatoes topped with crab.

Considering how many of us now eschew meat all or part of the time, it astonishes us that vegetarian restaurants are still ghettoized in many omnivores’ minds as purveyors of dank-tasting sprouts, pulpits for tempeh zealots, or gathering places for shaggy kombucha evangelists. That’s why the Plant Cafe feels like such a watershed, especially its handsome, high-roofed Embarcadero location, one of three in the city. Vegans self-identifying as “uppity” might scorn the cafe’s flexitarian ethos (you can order poultry or seafood if you like), but, frankly, flesh is nowhere near the kitchen’s strength. At its best, the Plant takes Greens’ food-that-just-happens-to-be-meatless innovation and updates it: Wild mushroom pizza, Thai green curry, and a seriously chocolaty TCHO pot de crème (its lush mouthfeel engineered with tofu) all exude a relaxed sense of accomplishment.

Only a few years ago if you were looking to send people to a waterside view, you’d have to go to Fisherman’s Wharf; now there are many options, starting with the newest which opened about a month ago.

Three times I tried to get into La Mar, and each time the latest I could nab a reservation was 6 p.m. so finally I took it. The sun was still shining and the bay glimmered, setting the mood for seafood. Even at that hour the place was bustling. The bar at the entrance was filled with people trying out one of the Pisco drinks on the menu; if you’re a fan, this is the place to come because few places do them better. Gaston Acurio’s concept clearly is a hit. This Peruvian chef, who also has restaurants in Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Spain, is trying to bring his beloved native cuisine to a wider audience, and he seems to have found willing converts. So far this is his only restaurant in the United States.

The revitalized Piers 1½, 3 and 5 on San Francisco’s historic waterfront have been named as finalists for a national excellence award presented annually by the Urban Land Institute, a 74-year old nonprofit that works on land-use issues. San Francisco Waterfront Partners’ Piers project was among the 17 finalists nationwide for ULI’s 2010 Award for Excellence, which were selected from a list of 170 entries from all over the Americas (South of Market’s Foundry Sqaure was the only other San Francisco project selected as a finalist for this year’s award.) “ULI’s Awards for Excellence recognize the full development process of a project, not just its architecture or design,” the nonprofit stated in a press release announcing the short list.

The first thing you notice when you walk into the Plant Cafe Organic at Pier 3, on San Francisco’s Embarcadero, is the stunning view of the Bay. La Mar Cebichería Peruana, the first U.S. restaurant from Peruvian star chef Gaston Acurio, will go into spacious seaside digs in the newly renovated Pier 1 1/2. As a cebichería, La Mar will specialize in Peruvian seafood dishes with Andean, Asian and Spanish influences. The menu will incorporate classic Peruvian dishes and ingredients, such as potatoes, tomatoes and chiles, as well as pastas combined with seafood and chile-infused sauces, all adapted to Northern California’s sensibility and ingredients.

Behind a construction curtain made of black mesh, just north of the Ferry Building, another piece of old San Francisco is being turned into part of the new San Francisco. It is swarming with workers carrying pipes, hammering nails and building forms for concrete. It’s all part of the Piers Project, a development with a 1,000-foot frontage on the Embarcadero. The three piers are being transformed into a complex with shops, restaurants, a dock for large yachts and water taxis, maybe a classy bookstore, perhaps a fish market. There will also be 60,000 square feet of office space when the whole thing is finished next May at a cost of $50 million.
